On your message board I just came across a 6 year old post from Dona
Olsen where she asked about an ancestor who was called Gustav Haugland and came
from a placed called Ytre Arne in Norway. I tried to mail her, but the mail
address was not valid any more. So I am hoping that she still reads this board,
or perhaps someone else knows how to get in touch with her?
I live about 5 miles from Ytre Arne, which is now called Ytre Arna.
This is a former industrial towh which is now a suburb to the city of Bergen.
My grandfather was Gustav's brother, and he lived all his life on the farm where
Gustav grew up. (It's a small world?)

I want to locate a picture (or pattern) of women's bunad cap for Rogaland.
I have all the parts. In fact, cap itself is made. But I don't know how to position
the various trims which are a part of the cap. Any pic/help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi all Sons of Norway Edvard Grieg Lodge #5-657 members!
I just joined Sons of Norway Today. I grew up in Wisconsin, but have lived in Cincinnati for many years ... just never thought of getting involved with Son of Norway ... until today! If this lodge needs some help with the website I can probably help out. And if anyone wants some lutefisk for Christmas Eve, I got way more than I need shipped to me from Wisconsin, just let me know.

Any ideas on how to locate the gravesite of my great
grandmother. Her name was Paula Kristine Bergby. She was once married to a Rider
Olsen but they divorced. So not sure what name she would be buried under. Also
not sure when she passed. Born 1905. Any thoughts are appreciated.

After 1000 miles we arrived in Fargo today around 2 p.m. for the Sons of Norway International Convention We had started out Tuesday at 2 p.m. and stayed over in Rockford and St. Cloud, Minn.
Opening ceremonies were at 4 p.m. Part of opening were greetings by the mayor of Fargo, and Moorhead, Minn. We had also had a greeting from Gary Gandrud the Nonorary Norway Consul General from Minneapolis.
Then we had a buffet dinner with a reception line with the outgoing president Dan Rude.
Friday and Saturday are meetings all day.

The World Choir Games were just here in Cincinnati and I want to let you know of a Norwegian choir that competed in the games. The EDT Choir from Hamar, Norway prepared for the last year and a half for their trip to Cincinnati. They consist of 31 singers from 14 to 30 years of age. They received gold medals in their two catagories. You may enjoy videos of them on U-tube as there are at least six videos of them singing here in Cincinati. The choir members were all wonderful and delightful and I hope you enjoy hearing them sing. What you need to do to find them on Utube is put EDT choir in Cincinnati.

I am trying to locate information about my Grandfather, Edwin Norum,
born December 29, 1860, in Rodo or Rodoy, Norway. His mother, Ellen Petersdtr,
was born December, 1821, Luroy, Norway. They both immigrated to USA in 1884,
but I'm not sure where they first settled. I know he lived in Marysville, Snohomish
County, Washington, from 1899 to 1909, and then moved to Delta, B.C., Canada,
where he died in 1937. His mother died in Washington state in March of 1903.
I don't know his father's name or if he had any siblings.

the second week. If you are in the Cincinnati area, contact me for all the details
of how to volunteer and what we will be doing. The Choir games will be in Cincinnati

Hello :-)
About 5 years ago I helped a woman (Emma) from USA to locate information about her ancestors. She had just a very little information, but I were lucky and found her Great Grandparents and the sad history about them.
They arrived Grand Forks, ND 1882 (from Norway), in 1884 Great Grandfather killed his wife and a few days later himself.
Left was three little children Marie(Mary in the USA?)born 1879, Martha (Emmas Grandmother) and little Andreas (Andrew?) born Feb 1882.
I have not been able to locate information about Marie and Andreas, but maybe someone here may help?
The children were placed together with friends/neighbours of the family, they wrote in the newspapers. Martha was raised in a Norwegian family by name Sven Olson.
Name of the father and mother was Knut and Inga Moe.

there some policy in Norway that went into affect that disallows them to be

your information at Jungle Jim’s in Fairfield. ICES is a not profile exchange
student program that works to find host family for these students coming to
study in the US for a school year. We have several students from Norway that
we are currently trying to find homes for. I was hoping to get some help from
your organization in finding homes for these studnets. All of our students come
with full medical insurance and monthly monies from their natural parents to
cover their personal needs, school expenses, entertainment , shopping and ect.
We only ask the host family to provide a bed for the student to sleep in and
food to eat while in the host family home. But most of all make them part of
the family.
Here is a few of the students that I am currently working to find homes

Notes regarding Tillie's
photos.
This was the 37th year for the Dayton Festival and our lodge had two
booths together. We had a display of cultural items and items to sell for a
fundraiser. The theme this year was music and many of the photos show how countries
related the theme at their booth. Many of the countries sell food and there
are a couple of photos of desserts. Each day they have a parade of the countries
and Jerry Elvrum, our president and his son JD carried the Norwegian flag on
Sunday. There is a photo with a girl and she has a sash, she was Miss World
Affair
May 17th at Kari Poe's house. There are photos of the parade from Kari's
house to the gazebo at the end of her street. Also photos of members and guests
enjoying the potluck in celebration of Constitution Day
Hello Everyone,

(Pedarsen, changed to Peterson at Ellis Island), and I've discovered some additional
information. I doubt this information will reach anyone that has further information,
but it's worth a shot.
Olaf Pedarsen arrived at Ellis Island in the 1800s from Oslo, Norway.
Initially, he worked as a boiler maker. Later, he moved with his son (Elmer
Clyde Peterson) to logging camps "up north" and used two teams of
horses to drag logs out of the forest.
Elmer met his wife, Emma Mary, who worked as a cook at the camps while
working with his father. Later, Elmer became a registered engineer, had his
own engineering company, and developed several patents.
Emma Mary's maiden name was Lau, and her parents were from Germany.
She was born in Detroit in 1895. Elmer was born in Michigan in 1884. For Elmer
and Mary, this was their second marriage.
My grandfather was their son, LeRoy Peterson, born in Detroit in 1930.
My father was James Michael. I am James Charles, and this is what I know as
of today.
If anyone knows ANYTHING about the surname Pedarsen, it would be greatly
appreciated. Thank you.

At the Portland (Oregon)ScanFair this weekend, I met a woman wearing
a wonderful long jumper-dress that I think I can say is in the style of the
bunad. It was made by ODA, a company that I gather may no longer do this kind
of thing. It was, I think, dark blue with a sort of pleat and a double line
of metal-tone buttons vertically down the front, above and below the slightly
high waist. It was a rather loose, boxy cut and the sides laced up, so that
one could loosen it a bit -- after Thanksgiving dinner, for example, or if one
was pregnant. This jumper was plain, no embroidery.
Does anyone have a current source for a jumper like this? Thank you
so much!

I have a beautiful Genuine Norwegian Blue Bunad Women's Size 14 -
16 for sale, I am asking $599.00, plus shipping costs.
It is handmade of authentic materials by Cousin and embroidered by
Aunt of the Vestergalen Islands in Norway. It was made for our Mom in 1982 she
wore it to many Scandinavian functions until 2002. This Bunad was one of her
most prized possessions and was taken care of accordingly (it is in very good
condition). The blouse has been sewn at a thin spot and has a few very slight
stains not noticable when wearing the full costume. It has silver cufflinks,
waist purse and shawl.
This Bunad is made of blue wool; the skirt and bodice are made of the
same fabric and color. The skirt is pleated in the front and finely pleated
in the back with a band of floral embroidery at the hem. The bodice is attached
to the skirt at the back and sides, and has floral design wool embroidery on
the front as well as on the back and closes with two pressed costume silver
hooks. The unattached purse is of the same color wool fabric as the skirt with
similar embroidery on the front, closing with a costume silver clasp with a
pressed floral design. The apron and shawl are made of blue and gold cotton
and the shawl has a knotted fringe. The blouse is made of white linen with a
band of white embroidery at the neck and cuffs. I can email pictures upon request.

I met a man, Tor Pederson, back in 1985 or 86. He was older than me,
but I'm not sure by how much. He should be somewhere between 55 and 60 (or so).
He was a tall (6'2" or taller), outgoing man with blondish curly hair.
He said he was from Norway, that he was divorced and had children living there,
that his connections (business partners) were in Norway. His parents lived in
Provo, Utah, and that he lived there on and off when he was younger. He said
he was a helicopter pilot, had some kind of connections in Malaysia, and also
did exporting of cars from the US to Norway. He bought a car from the dealership
where I worked with cash. He was well known by the head staff at many of the
casinos in Laughlin, NV. As quickly as he entered my live he disappeared. Does
anyone know this person and what ever became of him? Thanks so much for any

remember the Norsk for 'great'(duplicated for as many times as necessary!)I
even wrote letters to a certain 'Ingrid' for years, but that too has been left
behind.

The year is 1962 and I am a young sailor in the United
States Navy. I was lucky enough to be assigned to a special ship USNS Bowditch
T-AGS-21 that was conducting research of the oceans near Norway. In February
or March we were visitors in Trondheim, and guests of the Royal Norwegian Navy.
One of the events scheduled was a cross country ski meet and the snow had been
trucked in from the mountains to make the course as there was little natural
snow that year. While in Uniform I slipped on the ice and bumped into an elderly
man who was dressed very well. He was rather short in stature but when I said
enschuld mej, he replied, "It is not a problem." We chatted a bit,
and he said it is rather cold I am going up to the building (clubhouse) to get
a coffee, would you like one? I went up and he insisted on buying me a cup of
coffee. About 4 months later I found out that he was Kong Olav V the King of
Norway. Wow, I do not believe that many sailors had such an honor.

Hi,
My wife is Norewigan and we have a son who is presently serving in the US marines.
He will be home for Christmas and he has requested a lamb leg which he loves.
The Seaman Church here in Houston will have a bazzar in November but they are
not certain if they can get a lamb leg. Is there a butcher shop or store in
the US that you can recommend we contact to obtain Noreweigan meats?
Best Regards

In August 1964 I travelled the Scandanavia with my high school choir.
While in Bergen Norway I met a young man by the name of Jan Helge Nilsen. I
remember his address because we wrote faithfully for quite a long time and eventually
he came to Philadelphia to visit. His father owned a ship, freighter and he
hoped on for the voyage. He stayed with my parents and I several times over
the summer of 1965.He proposed marriage, unfortunately I was young and foolish
and did not want to leave behind my family and country. We lost contact after
he returned to Bergen. The address I have for him is 19 Birkenhiven. I would
like to get in contact with him and catch up on the last 44 years. Does anyone
know how I might be able to contact him?

Hi - I live in Missouri and plan to marry a fine Norwegian man about
a year from now. He is from Aust-Agder and although the wedding will be in the
USA we hoped to wear bunad. I am not from Norway nor do I have any ancestry
there. So basically, my understanding is I am free to "pick" whichever
bunad style suits me best. So basically, I figured either Aust-Agder since that
is where he lives or I really like Telemark and More og Rømsdal (sp?)
Anyhow- my question is how do I go about making a Bunad??? I mean,
I know how long and arduous the embroidery can be, but I have a bit over a year.
But I CAN NOT find a pattern to save my life anywhere online!
Does anyone have a pattern they can share with me OR know of a place
that sells them? It seems to be a closely guarded Norwegian National secret!!!
I am not an expert seamstress by any means but I think I can do it if I only
have some directions to guide me! ANY help from anyone in any area will be VERY
appreciated. Thanks!! Stacie

Hello,
I have a question concerning the Norwegian words YTRE ARNE. The Ellis
Island immigration records, shows an ancestor named GUSTAV HAUGLAND, arrived
in the US in 1912. That record gives his residence as YTRE ARNE, Norway. I am
finding that Ytre Arne is also a surname. Every time I try to find information
on the town of Ytre Arne, All I can find is accounts of people bearing that
name. Also, What is the definition of those two words. Is it a town? a person?,
or both?
Is there any one who can give me a crash course in way
the towns, cities, and villages of Norway were structured in that 1912 era.
I would also be grateful for any information on the ancestors, and descendents
of Gustav Haugland, and the two young men who were from the same place, and
traveled on the same ship as did GUSTAV
Their names were: GUSTAV, and KARL KVAMME.
Thank You.

the early 1990's and purchased it there from an estate sale. Is is from the
Osterdalen (sp?) area. It is wool, complete with two blouses, apron, hat and

I love it but do not wear it and think it is a shame to let it hang in the closet.

I have just become a new grandmother at age 42, and would like
a name that is not common in the U.S. for the word grandmother. I would like
my grandchildren to call me grandmother in the Norwegian language. I have been
looking online for the Norwegian term for "grandmother" and came up

or grandmother. Is this correct? If there are any other names for "grandmother"
in the Norwegian language, I would love to hear about them so I can choose one.
Thank you in advance for your responses!
Hi Sammie,
Yes, "mor-mor" is mother's
mother. The generic name for grandmother is "bestemor."

Vicki Nelson: Meat Balls or "Kjoettboller"
as we would call them, can be made in so many diffrent ways, but the reciepe
I usually use is:
250 g minced meat (beef)
250 g minced meat (lamb)
2 teaspoon salt
1 egg
3 spoons of rusk? (dried breadcrumbs)
2 clove of garlic
2 spoons of chopped onion
1 spoon of chopped green pepper
2 dl water
1,50 teaspoon of dried herbal spices (your choice, but I use oregano)
Just mix it all up and make spoon size balls. Fry them
on a medium hot pan in some butter/oil, until the are brown.

Hi Everyone:
At our May 17 Celebration at Kari Poe's home
I was asked by a few people for the recipe for the red cabbage that I brought
so here it is:
Red Cabbage Recipe
1 medium to large head red cabbage
1/3 cup butter
3 tablespoons vinegar
3 tablespoons sugar
1/2 cup water
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup red currant jelly (you can substitute whole cranberry sauce)
Finely shred the cabbage and put it in a large
pot with all other ingredients except the currant jelly. Cover and cook
on very low heat until cabbage is soft. This can be from 2 to 4 hours
until the cabbage is beyond crispy. Gently lift and turn the cabbage occasionally
as it cooks. Cooking slowly retains flavor and color, so be patient.
Do not allow the pan to go dry: add a very small amount of water if necessary
during cooking. After the cabbage is soft, add the currant jelly and continue
cooking 30 minutes more before serving.
Enjoy!
If anyone else has any recipes to share, please
send them and I'll get them on here. If we get enough to have a special
page for recipes, I'll do that, too.

written out accurately as my grandmother would just eye ball ingrediants and
it would come out wonderful every year.
If anyone would like to share a recipe with me, please let me know.

My Aunt Dagney would go to Norway and bring back these cookies for
my Grandpa. They were low in sugar (he was diabetic). So they were perfect for
him. They weren't really diabetic cookies though. This was way back in the 70's.
She has past away (about 10 years ago) and so has Grandpa. All I remember was
the box they came in was square, and had a picture of a Norwegian girl on the
cover. They were almost like crackers. Any ideas of how I can find out what
they are called and where I could get some?

Hi Doris:
"Søsterkake" is a sweet cake
served to guests in some parts of Norway. It is mentioned on this

By cutting and pasting, then searching the Internet
for it with this spelling:
Søsterkake
you should find more references to it and recipes

To my Lodge Family,
First, let me thank each of you for caring. Caring enough to keep the Christmas
traditions of our ancestors alive and passing them on to our children. Norwegians
really DO have Christmas traditions as we found out tonight...Once a year we
must have a Jule Fest. Yes, it took your hard work, your teamwork, and your
commitment to make it happen but it was worth every bit of it.
Second, you paid me an honor by allowing me to serve you as your President and
supporting the idea of sponsoring the Jule Fest . Tonight, you made me so proud
of each of you, to see you coming together as real Norwegian families always
do, and sharing the Season's joy with others. You made me cry...God bless you
for it. You manifest all of the virtues that the Sons of Norway stand for and
the reason why I first became a member. You are each special, extremely talented,
and you warm my heart when I watch you care for others.
The enthusiasm and momentum that we have generated tonight, as result of the
Jule Fest, should be a blessing for years to come. We will be laughing about
what occurred tonight for a long time. We made a lot of precious memories. Several
visitors saw what we have and expressed the desire to become members of the
Lodge...wonderful.
Take some quiet time to reflect upon what took place tonight and let's put together
an informal "after-action-report" and summarize what worked and what
didn't work so we can have an even better Jule Fest next year. Let's get together
for an open, every member welcome, Board meeting at Panerra Bread after the
first of the year and discuss what you thought about the Jule Fest and plan
the rest of the new year.
Several of you worked very hard in preparing for the Jule Fest, but I do not
believe it would have been such an overwhelming success without the oversight
of one person. That person is Carol Stone. The Jule Fest was Carol's and I want
her to know how much we appreciate the time she took to plan, organize and orchestrate
it down to the finest of details. It truly was a "family" Jule Fest,
and I believe that this is the direction we need to move in as a Lodge. Family.
Tonight we had the largest attendance of any Lodge meeting we have ever had
in our history. It appears the people have spoken.
Finally, as soon as possible we need to get the pictures of the children that
were taken tonight on our website. How soon can we make this happen?
Let's keep in touch. Have God Jule and until meet again next year, I remain
your servant and friend...

I note somebody asked what is the Norwegian name for Grandmother and
somebody answered it is bestemor. That is not strictly correct, it depends on
whether it is on the father's or mother's side: Father = farmor, Mother = mormor.
Bestemor is more a generic term.

I was so excited to find this site. From the time I was a young boy,
my father told me that my great grandfather came to the USA from Norway and
the original spelling of our last name was Pedersen. He also told me that his
wife was a German with the maiden name Peters. Although I've been able to trace
many other family surnames in my family tree, the Peterson name and my surname
of which I am a direct decendant is the one that remains the biggest mystery.
Anyone reading this message that would help me connect with my heritage is welcome

I am looking for an english translation of the Norwegian saying "gla
i dæ, beste. It was written on a ribbon draped over one of my relatives
coffin in Norway. I cannot find a translation in any of my books for this.
I think it can mean different things depending on the circumstances.
I think it means "in fond memories of you, grandfather". If anyone
could help me with this I would greatly appreciate it. I see "gla i dæ"
posted on many Norwegian web pages but no translations. I can't find dæ
any place. Is it old norsk for the formal form of you? Mange takk for hjelp.
Sean:
It's a dialect. It means "We love you, Grandpa."
The "We" is understood.
Direct translation is closer to: "We are
joyful for you." or "We are loving/affectionate of you."

Lois

I've just put Kjell's images on our main

celebrating Norway's Constitution Day with great friendship and food.
We also had a fantastic time at the dinner on
June 7 celebrating Norway's first 100 years of independence. We had the honor
of hosting the President of our District, received a proclamation from Ohio's
Governor Bob Taft delivered by Roman D. Fedkiw, Director of Ohio's Department
of Multicultural Affairs & International Relations, and enjoyed music by
Bob Ford. Esther
sent me an email to remind me that I forgot to take the proclamation with me
to scan for this web site so I'll pick it up in the next couple of days and
publish it here on the site with some of the images I took at the dinner.
You'll note I'm archiving earlier images and

Hello, I am trying to trace an old friend, his name is Tor but was
known as Tony, we shared a flat in London in 1969/70. I can't remember his surname,
but he came from Stavangar and was working in London until the early 1970's.
He had an old red lambretta scooter which he used to travel around the city.
He had a brother called Karl who came over to London for a holiday. Tony would
be in his late 50's early 60's by now, he wrote some time after returning to
Norway, but it was some time before I received the letter and I never replied,
I know this is not much information but I am hoping that maybe he will read
this and perhaps it will ring a bell

What a wonderful site you have. I received a flyer advertising
the Sons of Norway which was enclosed in a book I ordered from Amazon entitled
"Island Soul" (a Memoir of Norway) by Patti Jones Morgan about her stay
in Norway in the early 1990's. My maternal great grandmother, who
I lived with in Minnesota when I was young, and paternal great great grandfather
were both from Norway so I have an interest in things and places Scandanavian.
I have yet to visit Norway but hope it's in my future. I would like
to know if anyone knows where or what "Agakalla" is in Norway. When
I have located information regarding my great grandmother, Agakalla is
listed as here birthplace but I can't locate it on any map. If anyone
has any idea where this might be, please let me know. I have been

I am a Norwegian living with my husband and son in Plymouth, England,
and have no idea where I could find other Norwegians around. I know this
is a US based site, but if anyone knows anything about where I can find
others in the UK, maybe on a web site like this, I would be for ever grateful.
På forhånd, mange tusen takk,
Leni McCormick

here for 1 1/2 year now, and i am happy to see there are sites online where
other Norwegians or Americans with Norwegian heritage posting messages
or keeping contact.....will be keeping my eyes open for even more, and

I am excited to find that we have a sons of Norway lodge here in
Cincinnati. My Grandparents were members in Minnesota, I believe. I've
been researching my geneology, and somehow stumbled across your website.
Keep it up! I'd like to see more!

Hello! My name is Kim Soderberg. My son and I moved to the
Cincinnati area two weeks ago from North Dakota. Along with finding
my bearings around here, I have found that there are not many Norwegians!
I was so pleased to find your site. I am looking for an organization
that is close to my heart. I am so much into my Norwegian heritage
and would like to communicate with others. Any information someone
might have would be wonderful!! I will be checking into this site
regularily. Again, so good to see something "Norwegian" in a place
that is so different!
Welcome,
Kim!
We are so glad you found us here on the Net!
I'm sure you'll be hearing from Esther Charlton, our President, soon.
We look forward to seeing you at our meetings.
Thanks for writing,

Thank you for telling me about your site and lodge. There are some
pictures of Norway (and also Ohio) on my modest website at www.huset.demon.co.uk.
I've always been interested in Scandinavia although I have no birth connections.
Fortunately, several airlines are now offering quite low fares from the
UK making it much cheaper to visit than it was a few years ago.I wish you
good luck with your lodge.

Maybe I am the first for our guest book.
It has been exciting getting everyone involved with our lodge and
seeing the enthusiasm of all of our members.
As I said back at our Institutional Meeting we are a new baby lodge
and we are just taking our baby steps ompared with some of the much older
lodges. But, we have sure done a lot in our short time. If
anyone checks our website and needs information on joining please do email
me.
We are all enjoying our Norwegian heritage.
Esther
